HESTA, a leading superannuation fund for health and community services professionals, has unveiled a series of significant changes aimed at making insurance coverage more accessible and affordable for its members.
Effective from 1 July 2026, these changes include an average 12% reduction in insurance fees across all cover types, alongside enhanced protections during pregnancy and streamlined application processes.

For healthcare professionals, navigating the complexities of insurance requirements and ensuring adequate coverage against potential claims are critical concerns. HESTA's initiative addresses these challenges by reducing the financial burden associated with insurance premiums and simplifying the application process.

Key highlights of the upcoming changes include:

  • Fee Reductions: Members will experience average fee decreases of approximately 6% for death cover and nearly 15% for total and permanent disablement (TPD) cover. Income protection cover will see reductions ranging from 1.4% to 23.5%, depending on the benefit period. These adjustments mean more funds remain invested in members' superannuation accounts, enhancing their long-term financial security.
  • Enhanced Pregnancy Protections: The fund is removing the automatic exclusion of disabilities related to normal pregnancy, childbirth, or miscarriage from income protection claims in specified circumstances. This change provides stronger support for members during and after pregnancy, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by healthcare professionals in balancing their careers and personal lives.
  • Improved Application Process: HESTA is making it faster and easier for members to apply for insurance cover. Members will be able to apply for increased death (up to a total of six units) and income protection (up to a total of 12 units) cover at any time by completing a short personal health statement. This streamlined process reduces administrative hurdles and ensures that members can obtain the coverage they need promptly.

These enhancements reflect HESTA's commitment to providing insurance solutions that are not only affordable but also tailored to the specific needs of healthcare professionals. By addressing common pain points such as complex insurance requirements and the need for comprehensive yet cost-effective coverage, HESTA is positioning itself as a supportive partner in its members' professional journeys.

Members will receive detailed communications about these changes later this month, with updated Product Disclosure Statements (PDS) and Insurance Options Guides available on the HESTA website from 1 July 2026. For more information, members are encouraged to visit HESTA's official announcement.
